Rip Curl & Hawaiian Tropic Girls Tour

The girls were out in force last weekend when the The Rip Curl & Hawaiian Tropic Girls Tour came to Sorted Surf School here in Boscombe.

Tempted by the lure of the first artificial surf reef, the Rip Curl promoters made the trip across the channel and brought a whole load of surf goodies and special celebrities such as 2 x Womens World Surfing champion, Steph Gilmore.

The two day event took place right on the beach outside the Sorted Surf Shop & Surf School premises and couldn’t have been better. Blessed with perfect weather, it was a chance for the groups of local enthusiastic surfing novices to throw themselves in, learning from scratch or trying new tricks and maneuvers surrounded by qualified instructors and professional Rip Curl riders.

The event was exclusively for girls and was great to see Steph and her team mates offering inspiration and confidence to any girl who was looking to try something new or enhance their surfing techniques. The event wasn’t only about surfing, as the girls had a chance to join in with Hula dancing, art workshops, yoga and just letting their hair down.

Judge for yourself from the photos and video clip what a great time they had.

Boscombe Surf Reef – “Weights Reef”

In honour of David Weight, whose passion for the concept of artificial reefs has driven the project locally, as a surfing community we have decided to call it “Weights Reef”

11th November 2008 – Work stops for the winter
Yesterday the Reef contractors finally admitted defeat and returned to New Zealand for the winter.

The base layer of the reef is complete and will settle over the winter alowing the top sections to be deployed in the spring. We are hopeful that with a natural build up of sand there should be signs of a wave on therare occaision that a low spring tide coincides with a big groundswell.

Boscombe Surf Reef

Obviously there is a huge sense of disappointment amongst local surfers and business people as the delay means in reality it will be another year before we can see any action on “Weights Reef”

As the Sorted Surf Shop is right on the beach at Boscombe we will keep you posted as the progess once the contractors are back in action. Alternatively, if you want to keep an eye on things – check out the Boscombe Beach and Reef Surfcam.
